Feeling the weight of the world?

Illustration of an unhappy womanJoin us in the cosiness of the middle room at New Street Market, for our next Open Climate Conversation.

It’s more than climate change. It’s the unravelling of the old order — political instability, rampant polarisation, war-mongering, social fracture, economic uncertainty, and ecological breakdown all woven into one overwhelming, ungraspable, reality of 2026.

These are the polycrises of our time, and holding them alone is, well, burdensome. Yet it’s almost taboo to talk about it. Come, break the taboo together, building strength and inspiration in your local community.

Transition Woodbridge invites you to an open conversation where we can speak, and listen, honestly from the heart. This is a facilitated, supportive circle to share our fears, grief, and hopes as we navigate this complex transition. Alone? or together!

Join us on January 29 from 8-10pm to find strength in shared humanity.

Fabulous fruit

Photo: plumsOver the picking season, Transition Woodbridge members picked 179 boxes of fruit and produce! These were mostly apples, and also potatoes, beans, plums, grapes, crab apples, quinces and pears, from gardens and orchards.

Thank you to the people who offered fruit – the harvest was exceptionally good.

Boxes of fruit were taken to lunch clubs, retirement homes, food banks and a community cafe.

Open Wild Gardens – a wild success!

With a wide range of ponds and gardens to visit, our Open Wild Gardens event attracted lots of visitors, many of whom were inspired to put ponds in their own green spaces and generally to make space for nature.

Many thanks to everyone who helped on the day or baked cakes, and especially to those who opened their lovely gardens and were so forthcoming with their knowledge and experience.

Thanks to the Suffolk Wildlife Trust for donating leftover plants from their recent sale, and for their fun and informative pond-dipping session at Woodbridge Prep School.

We plan to have a ‘slide show’ event in the autumn where you will get a second chance to enjoy the gardens – plus more!

Open Wild Gardens 2025

Photo: flowery pondOn Saturday 28 June, from 10am to 4pm, Transition Woodbridge will present Woodbridge and Melton’s very own Open Wild Gardens!

This year is the year of the pond. There will be open gardens with a range of ponds, from large to tiny. If you have ever thought about building a pond, come and find advice and inspiration.

This event is completely free to attend. There will be friendly volunteers to direct you from garden to garden and you are sure to find tea and cakes along the way.

The beautiful gardens you can explore include:

  • A very special wild garden, with a natural spring which has been dammed to make a beautiful pond in the middle of flower-filled woodland.
  • An unexpected gem of a garden hidden behind a wooden door in a brick wall, with a beautifully designed pond.
  • A small, wild front garden with a tiny bucket pond hidden among the flowers.

Find out all about the Open Wild Gardens event, including a map of the gardens, addresses and descriptions.

Please note that dogs are not permitted in these gardens and that generally there will be areas of uneven pathways or terrain.

If you are thinking of building a pond, or want to know more about what it would involve, come along to a Suffolk Wildlife Trust Pond Surgery event, designed with Transition Woodbridge and kindly funded by Woodbridge Town Council.

Come and chat to Suffolk Wildlife Trust and work out how to overcome potential barriers to creating your own pond, or how to help a pond that needs some love, in your garden, space or work.

Please bring photos or videos of your garden or space (on your phone is fine).

These free drop-in events will take place at different venues and times over the Summer of 2025:

We hope to see you there!

Earth Day in Woodbridge

The theme for this year’s Earth Day was ‘Our Power, Our Planet’. Transition Woodbridge held a weekend of events in and around Whisstocks Place, to consider how we can bring renewable power into our lives and use our people power to improve our environment.

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who helped to make this a really enjoyable day as well as spreading some brilliant ideas and raising awareness of serious issues!

Enjoy the photos and videos below.

Open Wild Gardens – do you have a pond?

Photo of an iris near a pondOn the 28th of June, 2025, Transition Woodbridge will be holding its third open day for gardens which make space for nature and this year we will highlight gardens which have ponds.

We would love to include a wide range of ponds from the smallest to the largest and from the newest to the fully established and so would be delighted to hear from anyone in our community who has a pond that they would be willing to open up to visitors.

We have plenty of volunteers who help to make this day a success by offering support on the open day itself to our garden hosts. You won’t be doing this alone!

So please let us know if you have a pond in the Woodbridge and Melton area and are interested in joining us for this event, and thanks to those of you who have already offered. Our gardens will be open between 10am and 4pm on the 28th of June.

Looking forward to Earth Day

A graphic of the sun with the words, Power Up! Explore the future of energy. Fri 25, Sat 26 & Sun 27 April, Whisstocks Place & The Longshed, WoodbridgeApril 22nd is Earth Day, celebrated all around the world and here in Woodbridge too. It’s a day for people to come together to raise awareness of our amazing planet and what we can do to halt global warming.

This year the theme for Earth Day is Our Power, Our Planet as we move away from fossil fuels – oil, coal and gas – and turn to renewable energy. Transition Woodbridge invites you to our weekend of events in and around Whisstocks Place to consider how we can bring renewable power into our lives and use our people power to improve our environment.

On Friday, April 25th we shall have an illustrated talk in The Long Shed Gallery on ‘Climate Change: exploring People Power’ by Simon Hooton, 6.30 for 7pm start. Tea, coffee and cake. Admission free.

On Saturday, April 26th in Whisstocks Place from 10am until 4pm there will be a variety of stalls with information and advice on energy saving and installing energy efficient devices, generating renewable energy and energy storage in our homes. There will be information too on electric bikes and vehicles as well as plenty of fun and entertainment for all ages. In The Tidemill, Woodbridge’s very own brilliant example of renewable tidal energy, there will be short and entertaining talks and videos for children and young people on the environment, climate and energy throughout the day. In The Gallery at the Long Shed from 10 – 12 noon the theme of power continues with creative activities where children can join, with a parent, in making toys that work.

At 10am on Sunday 27th April join Jason Alexander at the Vintage Litter Museum in The Avenue, opposite Kingston Field, on a Litter Picking walk around Woodbridge and see the benefits of tidying up a small part of our Earth.

Finally on Sunday 27th April in The Long Shed Gallery, 1.30 for a 2pm start, Andrew Craig-Bennett will give an illustrated talk on exciting developments towards clean, sustainable fuels for the shipping industry on which we rely when we buy goods delivered to our country by ship and maybe enjoy cruising too.

Around the world there are impressive examples of developments in clean renewable energy delivering good jobs and benefits to the environment, our health and promises of prosperity. However, just now there is a move in some countries to go back to fossil fuels. People power will be needed to keep politicians and governments focused on reducing our global carbon footprint to avoid the worst of climate change, sea level rise and extreme weather events. And if we all make small changes in our own lives then together we can make a big difference.

So come and join us at our Earth Day events, for some fun together and learn more about the part we can all play in the transition towards a more healthy, sustainable, equitable and prosperous future.

Wassail, wassail!

Wassail, Wassail, all over the town…! The tradition of singing to bless your fruit trees and ensure a good crop goes back hundreds of years.

Thanks to everyone who joined in our Wassail. We blessed the fruit trees in Fen Meadow with cider and breadcrumbs whilst singing wassailing songs.

Thanks to all the musicians, Malcolm, Dan, Chris, Isla and especially Martin who accompanied us. Then we warmed up with more singing in the Cherry Tree.
