Spring Clean Woodbridge
Each year we have had the satisfaction of collecting a large amount of litter – wrappers and packaging from sweets, snacks and fast food, plastic bags, drinks bottles and cans, take-away drinks cups, straws, bags of dog poo, car park tickets etc etc. By far the largest number of items of litter comes from smokers – cigarette butts, wrappers, cigarette packets, lighters. We also find examples of fly tipping. In 2019 we were pleased to see fewer plastic water and drinks bottles and take away cups probably reflecting the impact of publicity about the need to recycle bottles or use re-usable bottles and cups. Perhaps more publicity about the harm caused to the environment by cigarette butts is needed.
Transition Woodbridge has been involved with organising this litter picking event each year since 2016. It is held over a long weekend in March as part of a national campaign promoted by Keep Britain Tidy. We are supported by Woodbridge Town Council and provided with equipment by Suffolk Coastal Norse. Many volunteers join our events showing their care for our town and our environment. Members of local groups – Woodbridge and Deben W.I groups, Woodbridge and Deben Rotary groups and Woodbridge Lions give enthusiastic support.
Many people regularly litter pick when they are out walking and they make a real difference to our town. By joining Spring Clean the litter picking becomes a more sociable activity, even fun. We work over 3 days working from at least 5 or 6 points around the town so are able to tidy up a large area – along the town side of the A12, in the Thoroughfare and Turban Centre, several streets, in all the town’s car parks, play areas, parks and open spaces. The litter is sorted into what can be recycled and what is rubbish and this is collected by Suffolk Coastal Norse . Bottles are put into bottle banks.
Transition Woodbridge now has the welcome support of Jason whose monthly Rubbish Walks in Woodbridge give people an opportunity to help tidy the town more often. (Jason’s website here)
