SUMMARY:Wildlife Live Webinar - Dormice Discovery

She is also the co-author of the 3rd edition of the Dormouse Conservation Handbook\, to be published in 2024. \nFind out more and book.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Live Webinar - Wild Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Nick Acheson guides us through the wild landscapes of East Anglia and the habitats they provide for wildlife. \nSuffolk Wildlife Trust’s webinars take place midweek evenings from 7pm via Zoom\, and can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. We cannot see nor hear any attendees\, so you can relax! But everyone is invited to ask questions via the Zoom Q&A panel at the end of the presentation. \nOn account of its huge range of soils and land-use history\, and its tremendous coastline\, East Anglia is among the UK’s most diverse regions for wildlife and wild habitats. Countless rare species have their national strongholds here and many are found nowhere else. In this fascinating online talk\, Nick documents the major habitats of East Anglia from the soil and water upwards\, through their characteristic vegetation to the animals that inhabit them. \nNick Acheson is a conservationist and naturalist who grew up in North Norfolk and\, following a ten-year stint in South America and work on every continent and ocean\, has retuned to his home county. He is an ambassador for Norfolk Wildlife Trust\, a trustee of Pensthorpe Conservation Trust and a patron of Felbeck Trust. His first book The Meaning of Geese won the East Anglian Book of the Year award 2023. \nFind out more and book.

SUMMARY:Wind\, Tide and Oar
DESCRIPTION:Wind\, Tide & Oar is a compelling exploration of engineless sailing\, shot on 16mm film over three years. The film delves into the experiences of those who travel solely by harnessing the natural elements alone\, following a diverse array of traditional boats and uncovering the unique rhythms and motivations of engineless navigation. \nJourneying through rivers\, coastlines\, and open seas\, spanning the UK\, the Netherlands\, and France\, Wind\, Tide & Oar creates a contemplative space\, addressing themes of ecology\, heritage\, traditional skills\, and maritime history. Using a 1960s hand-wound camera\, Wahl offers a poetic and intimate perspective on a millennia-old craft\, upended by the invention of mechanised power. \nThrough the film’s reveries\, sailing becomes a means to explore our interaction with and responsibility to the environment. It invites deep reflection on our relationship with nature\, our understanding of and commitment to sustainability\, and our care for the world around us. \nThe film is shot around Suffolk\, Cornwall and Essex. \nPREVIEW SCREENING AS THIS WILL NOT BE OFFICIALLY RELEASED UNTIL APRIL 2025 \nFind out more and book tickets.

SUMMARY:Nightjar Ecology and Movements
DESCRIPTION:There is an opportunity to learn more about a fascinating bird which spends the summer on our Suffolk heathlands when Dr Greg Conway from the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) gives a talk entitled ‘Nightjar Ecology and Movements’ at Woodbridge Community Hall\, Station Road\, IP12 4AU on Thursday 16 January 2025\, starting at 7.30 pm. \nThis talk has been organized by Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s Woodbridge Wildlife Group\, and Chairman Phil Smith said “The sight and sounds of the nightjar are unique and we are fortunate that the bird finds the heathlands and conifer habitat that it needs here in Suffolk. It is going to be fascinating to hear more about this bird from Dr Conway\, who has been at the forefront of BTO research into nightjar populations and migrations.” Mr Smith added “Our summer nightjar walks at Blaxhall Heath are always popular and I hope that local people will find this talk equally fascinating.” \nAdmission to the talk is £4 for adults with under 25s free. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a raffle. Doors open at 7pm and there is no need to book for this talk – pay on entry with cash or card. Find out more.
