SUMMARY:Fromus Blackberry Day
DESCRIPTION:Simpson’s Fromus Valley is a series of species-rich flower meadows with a fascinating history. To provide protection to sensitive flora\, the gates to this nature reserve are normally locked\, but it is opened to the public two or three mornings a year. \nSaturday 13 September is one such morning – just in time for blackberry picking! Sloes\, bullaces and blackberries are all there for the picking from the hedgerows for your larder — just leave some for the birds! \nTrustees and volunteers will be on hand for guided tours\, or you can take a self-guide leaflet and explore the 28 acres at leisure. There’s something for everyone — medieval earthworks\, bugs\, butterflies\, spiders\, dragonflies\, birdlife and\, of course\, wild flowers! Wear long trousers/sleeves and sturdy boots as the ground is uneven and may be muddy. \nSorry\, no dogs. \nFind out more here.

SUMMARY:Visit to RSPB Minsmere
DESCRIPTION:A visit to RSPB Minsmere\, a vital pitstop on the route of the East Atlantic Flyway. \nThis event has been organised especially on behalf of Greenprint Forum members\, but is open to all. \nVisited by millions of birds annually\, RSPB Minsmere is a key part of the extensive network of coastal wetlands along the east coast that have collectively been nominated for UNESCO status as a Natural World Heritage site\, as the English East Coast Wetlands\, which in turn form part of the East Atlantic Flyway\, for their global significance for migratory wetlands birds travelling between the Arctic and southern Africa. \nThe RSPB have offered to show us around the diverse habitats forming this reserve of some 1\,000 hectares\, learn about its biodiversity\, the importance of the reserve in the context of the wider East Atlantic Flyway\, and what the UNESCO bid for the East Coast Wetlands might mean. \nRegister here so we know who and how many to expect.

SUMMARY:Rydal Mount – Celebration of local biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:It’s surprising what biodiversity is right under our noses\, and Rydal Mount is a prime example. Just outside the village of Wissett\, set in 25 acres of wood and wildflower pasture\, this is the setting for a full day’s practical immersion into the work and challenges to conserve our environment. \nThe pressures on the environment\, farmland\, towns and villages are well known. Sunny flat Suffolk is earmarked for acres of solar panels on farm land and the pressure on our coast to develop four large energy systems is potentially devastating for the fragile biodiversity near by. \nThis is a day of practical seminars\, addressing these challenges (a new solar farm has recently passed planning on farmland adjacent to Rydal Mount)\, as well as what inspiring work is being done locally to enhance and protect our local biodiversity. It is a chance to partake\, learn\, look\, listen\, walk\, exchange and meet. \nThis is particularly relevant for local Parish Councillors who are obliged to create a Biodiversity Action Plan for their locality\, as well as local people keen to become involved in what they can do or learn. \nBook your place at this event\, which is organised by Alan Witherby and Halesworth ASH.
