SUMMARY:Wildlife Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:To give nature the best chance to recover from the effects of human activity and the climate crisis\, it’s essential to create more space in our landscape in which nature can recover and become abundant again. \nWhilst Suffolk Wildlife Trust owns and manages a total of 2\,900 hectares of land on 50 nature reserves across Suffolk\, these alone cannot provide the space needed for wildlife to recover. It is essential for us all to work together with fellow landowners and communities to prioritise nature for the good of all. Helen Bynum\, farm wildlife advisor\, will share with us the collaborative Landscape Recovery projects that have taken place across the county and the benefits gained for wildlife. \nSuffolk Wildlife Trust uses the Zoom platform for its webinars and\, when you book\, you will receive simple instructions on how to join the event from the comfort of your own home.

SUMMARY:Even older houses can become carbon-neutral\, with Ralph Carpenter
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nDon’t lose hope if you live in a Victorian gem: deep retrofitting and a heat pump can reduce your energy consumption by up to 75% \nDomestic property energy consumption equates to 14% of all UK carbon emissions\, and older buildings can provide us with more flexibility to adopt appropriate solutions \nBuilding regulations are designed to allow us to retrofit appropriately. In good authorities regulators are even prepared to abandon data and be flexible. \nOur Speaker \nRalph Carpenter is an architect. He owns the Zero Carbon House in Hartest\, Suffolk and is considered to be the ‘grandfather’ of hempcrete. A key part of Ralph’s mission is to show communities and individuals what really is possible in terms of creating inspiring\, low-impact green buildings to live and work in. \nJoin us at Woodbridge Methodist Church for an inspiring evening of knowledge-sharing and networking. \nDoors open at 6:30PM for a cup of tea and the opportunity to mingle. \nFind out more and get tickets

SUMMARY:A Solar Farm in Space? Why not\, says Dr Dan Clery
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nFusion Power and other FutureTech is one thing\, but when Dan mentioned orbiting solar panels\, always in the sun\, we were hooked. \nThere was a time when coal was gold. We’ve absorbed the solar panel and the nuclear reactor\, but it looks like there’s a lot more coming our way in terms of energy technology. Dr Dan Clery will uncover and demystify some of the solutions that don’t yet make sense to us. \nOur Speaker \nDr Daniel Clery is a graduate in theoretical physics who has for more than 20 years worked as a writer and editor on some of the world’s top science magazines\, including Physics World\, New Scientist and Science. Appointed as Science’s news editor in Europe in 1993\, he has covered many of the big science news stories of the past two decades\, and has become one of the magazine’s foremost writers on energy research\, addressing topics including fission and fusion energy\, wind and solar power and tidal barrages. \nJoin us at Woodbridge Methodist Church for an inspiring evening of knowledge-sharing and networking. \nDoors open at 6:30PM for a cup of tea and the opportunity to mingle. \nFind out more and get tickets

SUMMARY:The other end of the Citizen Science chain\, with Dr Mark Bowler
DESCRIPTION:Overview \n“I work on landscape-scale conservation\, sometimes with camera traps\, sometimes with remote audio surveys\, and always with people” \nCitizen Science (CS) and Community benefit are the beating hearts of the DCC (can you have two?) If you’ve ever had a Transition Woodbridge bat-box in your garden\, you’ll be pleased to know that Mark is the driver of that excellent CS project. He’ll probably talk about bats\, harpy and other Amazonian eagles\, but mostly he’ll talk about their habitats and the threats they face. \nOur Speaker \nDr Mark Bowler is a spatial ecologist and science communicator with twenty years’ experience in wildlife monitoring\, behavioral ecology and conservation research. He is Course Leader in Wildlife\, Ecology and Conservation Science at the University of Suffolk. He started his career in the Peruvian Amazon\, and continues to work in the tropics and the UK. He has a strong record of academic publishing and is active in public engagement\, citizen science and landscape scale conservation. \nJoin us at Woodbridge Methodist Church for an inspiring evening of knowledge-sharing and networking. \nDoors open at 6:30PM for a cup of tea and the opportunity to mingle. \nFind out more and get tickets

SUMMARY:Home Solar and Battery systems with Phil Bull
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nA plain-English exploration into a topic which baffles many. \nHave rising energy bills and concern about climate change tempted you to invest in a home solar PV system and maybe a battery too? In this talk\, Phil will seek to de-mystify a subject that people have told him they find confusing. He will describe his own system\, his experience of running it over the past five years and will quantify its behaviour. He will talk about things he has learned\, some of which would have been nice to know before he embarked on his “green adventure”. \nOur Speaker \nPhil Bull is a member of the Martlesham Climate Action group and DCC who has presented on this topic at various climate events. He has spoken with many system owners and prospective owners at these events\, from which some common questions (and myths) have emerged. He is not a solar systems professional\, but from his own experience and from discussions at these events he has distilled some key considerations for those thinking about installing a system. Phil is a retired engineer who worked as a researcher at BT’s Labs at Martlesham Heath for several decades. He is a member of the IET. \nPhil is a retired research engineer\, having had a career of 47 years in the communications industry. His extensive R&D experience was in a range of domains including digital homes\, smart energy metering\, broadband and advanced diagnostics systems. Phil has been taking steps to reduce home energy consumption and become “greener” for some years. He believes that technology is most effective for most people when it is hidden in the background and made easy to use. SUMMARY:Energy for the Community with John Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nHow a community can work together to own their own power station\, and provide all the energy they need for their homes. \nWhat is Community Energy? Across the country more groups\, communities\, and institutions are getting excited about community energy. Solar panels on the roof of your own house is the most obvious way to generate clean electricity. But what if there was a more cost-efficient means of doing this. \nWhat if\, for example\, you could join ranks with like-minded neighbours and create a renewable power station\, using solar or wind\, to serve the town or village you live in? \nWell\, that’s not as far-fetched as you may have thought. All over Britain communities are joining hands to lease land\, install solar panels\, and power their homes with clean energy. \nOur Speaker \nJohn Taylor is the Head of Capacity Building and Strategic Development at Community Energy England (CEE)\, a key organisation promoting local renewable energy projects in England. John focuses on supporting community-led initiatives\, often engaging with government and local authorities to overcome barriers to development\, such as grid access. He advocates for policies enabling greater local energy generation and resilience\, working on initiatives like the #EnergyLearningNetwork and promoting community ownership of solar and battery systems. \nJoin us at Woodbridge Methodist Church for yet another inspiring evening of knowledge-sharing and networking. \nDoors open at 6:30PM for a cup of tea and the opportunity to mingle. \nFind out more and get tickets

SUMMARY:Climate Change Gardening with Clive Boase
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nExpert speaker Clive Boase from Climate Change Gardening talks about how the changing climate is affecting your garden. \nPrivate gardens are the third largest UK land use sector\, and in urban areas they form 25% of the landscape. Together\, gardens have the potential to help mitigate climate change impacts\, and also to enrich our increasingly threatened wildlife. With over 20 million people identifying as gardeners\, our choices of plants\, cultivation techniques\, composts\, watering\, wild areas\, and many other details\, can make an important difference\, locally and nationally. \nThere are many inexpensive and simple ways in which you can help your own garden to mitigate climate change\, and also enable it to become more resilient\, productive and enjoyable. However\, you don’t have to do everything all at once – even small changes can bring big benefits locally\, across the wider landscape\, and beyond…. \nOur Speaker \nClive Boase is a trustee of the charity ‘Climate Change Gardening’. The charity was established in 2024\, to encourage gardeners to adapt their gardening practices to help mitigate the climate and biodiversity crises. The demand for their outreach work has grown very rapidly\, partly driven by the extreme weather in recent years. In 2025 they were involved in around 40 different events\, and engaged face-to-face with over 1800 gardeners. This gives them a valuable and unique opportunity to understand issues\, and inspire changes in gardening practice. Together\, England’s 20 million gardeners can make a lasting difference. \nJoin us at Woodbridge Methodist Church for an inspiring evening of knowledge-sharing and networking. \nDoors open at 6:30PM for a cup of tea and the opportunity to mingle. \nFind out more and get tickets

SUMMARY:A Wild Evening with Ross Piper
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nRoss looks at the extraordinary diversity of insects\, what makes them so important\, why they’re under threat and what we can do to help them \nInsects\, among all animals\, are completely unparalleled in terms of species number and the breadth of their lifestyles: from wasps so tiny that several could fit comfortably inside a full-stop\, all the way up to hand-sized beetles. Globally\, just over one million species have been described\, with millions more still out there and so much yet to learn about their biology. What we do know is that they live in every conceivable way on land and in freshwater. With so many species and individuals\, insects have their feet in a lot of pies\, ecologically speaking. Whether it’s pollination\, the recycling of organic matter\, the churning of the soil or simply being eaten by larger animals\, their reach is immense. Without them\, humans wouldn’t survive very long at all. \nRegardless of how successful they are\, insects face a new challenge in the shape of humans. Long-term data from lots of places around the world appear to show that some insects are in steep decline – a direct result of human activity. We’ve been very good at making more humans\, our growing population bending more and more of the environment to our needs. In the last fifty years alone we’ve hammered the natural world in new and creative ways\, using our fiendishly ingenious technology to destroy\, convert and consume it. The destruction and fragmentation of habitats wipes out populations and species\, leaving any survivors isolated and vulnerable to other calamities. The good news is that insects are nothing if not resilient and there’s lots we can do to reverse these declines. \nOur Speaker \nDr Ross Piper is an entomologist and zoologist whose work has taken him around the world. Through his writing and TV work he shares his enthusiasm for the remarkable diversity of the other animals we share this planet with. The most recent species he has discovered is named after his young daughter\, although she was rather underwhelmed. \nJoin us at Woodbridge Methodist Church for an inspiring evening of knowledge-sharing and networking. \nDoors open at 6:30PM for a cup of tea and the opportunity to mingle. \nFind out more and get tickets
