Biodiversity, Mini Nature Reserves & Rewilding

As part of its aim to increase biodiversity across Woodbridge and to aid pollination of the fruit trees in the scattered orchards, Transition Woodbridge has created some mini nature reserves in some unloved corners of the town. One such place is the corner of Chapel Street/New Street where, with the help of Greg & Anna, we have converted the area with insect-friendly plants. Greg & Anna wanted to celebrate their wood wedding anniversary and were only too happy to fund the corner being so close to the Shire Hall where they were married.   The bed is maintained and watered by volunteers on our watering rota.

Another corner is the Skateboard bed, next to the skateboard park behind the Community Hall, where we have created a similar environment to attract insects to the area. In March 2022, we created a dead hedge and rewilded the bed behind the cannon at the Red Lion junction

We are currently encouraging biodiversity by protecting the road verges from being mown between April and September in order to enjoy the wildflowers that decide to grow there and the insects that they attract.  3 sites (Lime Kiln Quay car park, Hillyfields, Through Duncans) have been rewilded and included in East Suffolk Council’s “Pardon the Weeds, we’re feeding the bees” mowing regime.  These are being monitored for species of flowers that grow there.
